Ballroom Dance Lessons

September 7, 13, 20 and 27, 2010 ~ Meadville Senior Center

The Meadville Senior Center will be offering ballroom dance lessons during September, 2010. Classes will be held on September 7th (Tuesday), 13th, 20th, and 27th. Ballroom dance is a fun way to exercise, improve coordination and balance, and to keep your joints flexible. The first class meets on Tuesday (because of Labor Day) and the rest of these classes meet on Mondays at 1PM in the Lew Davis Community Building, 1034 Park Ave., Meadville, Pa. These dance classes will cost $20.00, which is payable at the time of registration. Our very talented instructor for these lessons is Maddalena Roae, an established local dance teacher. She is a certified instructor with the Dance Educators of America and a member of the United States of America Ballroom Dance Association (USABDA). Individuals and couples are welcome; partners are not necessary! Class size is limited so register early. Classes are open to anyone who is 60 years of age or older. September 11 Memorial Ceremony

The Meadville Patriot Action Committee (MPAC) will sponsor an event to remember the 2,993 victims and first responders of September 11, 2001. Concert: Angélique Kidjo

Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Angélique Kidjo will perform on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. in Shafer Auditorium on the Allegheny College campus. Hailed as “Africa’s premier diva” by Time magazine, Kidjo is a native of Benin. Her music is known for soulful, uplifting melodies that combine elements of R&B, funk and jazz with African, European and Latin American influences. In 2007, Kidjo’s album “Djin Djin” won the Grammy Award for best contemporary world music album and the NAACP Image Award for outstanding world music album. Her career also has included collaborations with Alicia Keys, Carlos Santana, Josh Groban, Dave Matthews and John Legend, among others. An accomplished philanthropist, Kidjo has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2002, traveling to Haiti and many African countries. She also founded the Batonga Foundation, which supports the education of girls in Africa by granting scholarships, building schools and developing mentoring programs.
